The NRSB Team

Our History

The National Radon Safety Board (NRSB) was founded as a single-purpose, non-profit organization that became operational in 1998, after the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) discontinued their National Radon Proficiency Program. The overall structure of the NRSB was based on the model of the American Board of Health Physics (ABHP), which is widely recognized as the premier qualifying body for radiation safety practitioners. The criteria for the NRSB certification and accreditation credentials were based directly upon the EPA’s model of a privatized radon proficiency program.

Our Board Members

The NRSB has been governed since its inception by professionals from both the public and private sectors of the radon field and the structure of the Board provides a broad range of expertise. The Board members serve on a voluntary basis, which helps the NRSB maintain the lowest possible costs for the program. This provides direct benefits to the industry, its certificate holders, and the communities it serves.

Board Member Responsibilities

The Board of Directors is responsible for setting the standards, procedures, policies, and certification requirements of the NRSB.

In addition to their NRSB governance responsibilities, the Board Members oversee the policies for:

  • Approval of radon measurement devices
  • Secondary and Tertiary Chamber approvals
  • New course approvals
  • Any complaints lodged against one of our certificate-holders

Besides the annual meetings the Board of Directors may introduce debate, amend, and vote upon resolutions via electronic procedures.

Externally, the NRSB Board Members also:

  • Serve on several of the ANSI/AARST Standards Committees, working to establish and update industry standards and requirements
  • Work with the individual States and the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD), to collaborate on their radon work
  • Engage with CR3, a non-profit organization fostering radon education in the schools

Several of our Board Members began serving with the NRSB at its inception, providing continuity to the NRSB’s vision, objectives and work.
