HOW TO BECOME AN NRSB-CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL

HOW TO BECOME NRSB-CERTIFIED

Prior to certifying with the NRSB, you will need to ensure that you are following all regulations in the state(s) in which you will be performing radon services – some state also have licensing requirements. We advise you to check the state radon representative for current information. The following link will take you to a US map, where you can find the links to the State programs: https://gispub.epa.gov/radon

NRSB Certification ensures that you are meeting the current national radon standards. Licensing is done by the State, not by the NRSB. However, many states that require a license to operate in their state, accept NRSB Certification as a requirement for their license.

Here is a simple check list for INITIAL NRSB certification:

  1. Complete an NRSB-approved initial course. The list of approved initial courses for Measurement can be found at this link: https://nrsb.org/courses/initial-courses-for-measurement ; the list of approved initial courses for Mitigation can be found at this link: https://nrsb.org/courses/initial-courses-for-mitigation.
  2. Submit a copy of the certificate of completion for this course with the initial application.
  3. Take and pass the NRSB exam for your desired certification: Radon Measurement Technician (RMT), Radon Measurement Specialist (RMS) or Radon Reduction Specialist (RRS). The link for ordering and scheduling these exams is: https://nrsb.org/exams/digital-exam-information/
  4. Submit a copy of your NRSB Exam Score letter with a passing grade (70% or higher) with the initial application.
  5. Complete the INITIAL application(s) for certification, including any required documentation detailed in the application(s). The links to these documents are found below under each certificate designation.

For those looking to certify as either a Radon Measurement Technician or Radon Measurement Specialist:

    • Electret Ion Chamber Device (EL, ES):
      • If you are reading your own electrets, you must become an NRSB Accredited Laboratory.
      • Provide a current (within 12 months) certificate of calibration for each Volt Reader use for the devices listed on the application

For those looking to certify as a Radon Remediation (Mitigation) Specialist:

  • Submit a certificate for a minimum 16 hours of Radon Measurement training in addition to the NRSB-approved initial mitigation training course.

A Radon Measurement Technician may oversee the QAP for self-provided measurement services only. A Radon Measurement Specialist must oversee the QAP for every other measurement service type, including laboratory and chamber services.

For NRSB Certification as an RMT you will need to complete the following:
